CLASS SYLLABUS FOR 2004-2005

1. CLASS ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

Students will be expected to be on time and attend all classes. Each unexcused absence will result in a deduction of 2.2 from a student's final grade. All work missed during unexcused absences will receive zero credit. Additionally, students are expected to participate in all class related activities.

Each student is responsible for all material presented in class including announcements, assignments and must make arrangements for retrieving this information when absent.

It is highly recommended that students subscribe to the CAVE's emaillist service. this service is open to all of The CAVE's current ninth grade students. Please note that the list is for discussion of information relating to The CAVE's class only. Inappropriate use ofthe emaillist will result in immediate removal fromthe list, parental notification, and possible referral to Blanche Ely High School's administration for further disciplinary action.

 

2. REQUIRED MATERIALS

Each student must have the following materials in class each day.

1. White, lined ,loose-leaf paper

2. black/blue pens (minimum TWO)

3. Number 2 lead pencils (minimum TWO)

4. Class notebooks (as required)

5. textbooks (as required)

For World History Honors each student will be required to maintain a notebook of all related class materials. All materials inthe student's notebook will be securely fastened into the notebook, maintained in chronological order and written in ink.

 

3. STUDENT WORK

All work is due on the specified date at the beginning of the class period. NO late work will be accepted for credit. Work not tuned in on time will receive a grade of zero. If a student is excused absent onthe date an assignment is due, the student will turn in the work on the day they return to class or the work will be considered as late.

 

4. ESSAYS AND TESTS

If a student is excused absent on the day an announced test is given, he/she will make arrangements to complete the missing work on the day he/she returns to class. All tests and essays will be announced at least three days prior to their occurance and students shall be prepared to complete them on time.

 

5. RENAISSANCE FAIRE

Each student will create and play a character in the class Renaissance Faire. Portrayal of this character will include, but not be limited to, speaking and writing the proper language (Elizabethan English), preparing a suitable costume and appropriate props, as well as constructing a setting within which the character will exist. Participation in the faire will constitute 80% of the student's final exam grade.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: All faire projects are to be fully assembled at the site of the Faire by 6:00 p.m. on the announced due date. Any student whose completed project is not assembled and on site by the aforementioned time will receive a failing grde for the project. There are NO excaptions! The student should still participate in the faire so long as he or she is in full costume and has his or her appropriate props. The student can thus receive some points for participation, but not for the project.

A six to ten page, typed MLA-formatted research paper will accompany the Renaissance Faire project and constitute 20% of the student's grade for the marking period. The student must submit two copies of the paper in order to receive credit in both English and history.

 

HISTORY STANDARDS

 

TESTS.
 
1. Students should expect a history quiz 2-3 times weekly. Each quiz will cover work done the previous 1 to 2 days. If a student is absent (excused) there will be no need to make up the quiz. If the absence is unexcusesd a zero will be recorded. Quizes will begin when the class period starts. Late students will miss those questions for which they are not in attendance.

2. The number of questions will vary depending upon the particular work covered on the previous days.

3. Each quiz will have a weighted value of 1.

4. The point value for each question will vary depending on the number of questions given. Each quiz will be worth 100 total points. (Example: 10 questions on the quiz -- each question is worth 10 points; 5 questions on the quiz -- each question is worth 20 points)

5. Quizzes must be written in ink, have a one inch margin on all sides, use the front side of the page only and have a proper heading in order to be graded.

6. All answers must appear in complete sentences unless a list isspecifically requested.

7. A full and complete answer must be provided in order to receive credit.

ESSAYS

1. Essays given as part of unit tests will only be weighted as part of the total test.

2. Essays must be written in either blue or black ink.

3. Essays which stand alone will carry a weighted value of 2.

4. Each essay will be scored according to the rubric provided for the essay in question.

 

 

PROJECTS

Any project which has a written component, and which is scheduled to be completed outside of class MUST be typed. No spelling errors will be tolerated. Each spelling error will result in the loss of one letter grade for the assignment. All papers will be typed in MLA format and will be accompanied by a Works Cited page done in MLA format.

Projects will include but not be limited to the following:

 

COMPARITIVE RELIGIONS

Each student will complete a typed paper comparing the world's major religions. The paper will follow MLA format and other related instructions provided on the class handout. Additionally, a MLA format Works Cited page will be included.

 

TECHNOLOGY PROJECT

Each student will complete a typed paper explaining the important of his/her assigned technological innovation. The paper will follow MLA format and other related instructions provided on the class handout. Additionally, a MLA format Works Cited page will be included.

 

STONE AGE TOOL

Each student will construct a stone age tool to meet the following criteria.

1. The tool will be due at the beginning of the class period on the date announced.
2. The tool will carry a graded weighted value of 2.
3. The tool will be made entirely of materials found or gathered by the student. Nothing may be purchased.
4. No modern tools may be used to construct the stone age tool (i.e. hammers, saws, pliers, etc.).
5. Only materials available to stone age man may be used in completing this project.
6. The tool must withstand "field testing." The completed tool will be "used" to perform its natural task and should not break while it is being used.
7. The tool will be accompanied by a one page written report which will be scored by essay standards.
The written report will be scored by the English instructor and will require that the following standards are met:
A. The report will be 1 single, full type written page and will be double spaced.
B. The page will follow proper MLA format which will include one inch margins on all four sides with a font size not to exceed 10-12 points. Not script or "fancy" type fonts are to be used.
C. The paper will include a Works Cited page done in proper MLA format.
D. The paper will include at least 2 internal citations done in MLA format.
8. Any student who elects to make a hammer/axe type tool will not earn a grade higher than a C and then only if the tool passes the field test.
9. Scoring:

 a. originality  20%
 b. craftmanship  30%
 c. field test  50%

 

RENAISSANCE SIGN/

RESEARCH SUMMARY


The objective of these assignments is to have the student construct a historically accurate sign or banner which clearly identifies the student's Renaissance character by trade, profession or family. These signs or banners should be suitable for display on Faire day. Additionally, these projects will provide practice for the final research paper.

Sign Specifications
In addition to meeting the requirements detailed above the sign or banner shall adhere to the following:
1. must be clean, neat and complete
2. must range in size from 14" x 22" minimum to 28" x 22" maximum
3. must contain a minimum of three colors
4. must contain no words or letters
5. may be three dimensional
6. must NOT be made from any corrugated (brown cardboard) material
7. must not feature the use of Scotch tape or (or equivalent)
8. must have finished edges on all materials other than paper
9. must be suitable for and able to be hung
10. the sign or banner shall be clearly viewed and recognizable from a distance of 20 feet.


Each of the above items will constitute 10% of the student's grade for this portion of the assignment.

This project will carry a weighted value of 1.

 

RENAISSANCE PROJECT


Objective: To provide each student with the opportunity to experience what life was like in a past age.

Each student will create and play a character in the Renaissance Faire. Portrayal of this character will include, but not be limited to, speaking and writing the proper language, preparing a suitable costume and appropriate props as well as constructing a setting within which the character will exist. Refer to the following rubric for further details.
A six to ten page, typed, MLA-formatted research paper will accompany this activity and be included in the student's quarter grade. The student must submit two copies of the paper in order to receive credit in both English and history.


1. Suggestions for costumes, building and implements may be found on

2. On a date to be determined (approximately one week before the actual Faire) each student will present all of his implements for grading. The number and type of implements will vary depending on the role being played. A single grade will be given based on the following criteria:
 a. craftsmanship  20%
 b. appearance  30%
 c. durability and use  20%
 d. historical accuracy and research  30%

3. On the day before the actual Faire each student will set up and display their dwelling or setting. Each student will be graded on their dwelling based on the following criteria:
 a. craftsmanship  25%
 b. appearance  25%
 c. durability and use  25%
 d. historical accuracy and research  25%
.
4. Students will prepare a two-three minute oral presentation, demonstrating their proficiency in Elizabethan English and knowledge of their trade or role. The presentation will occur 2-3 days prior to the actual Faire. On a date to be determined (approximately one week before the actual Faire) students must submit a complete script of the presentation for examination by the instructor. This assignment will be scored as follows:
 a. knowledge of material  33.3%
 b. presentation  33.3%
 c. vocaulary  33.3%

RENAISSANCE FAIRE


The Renaissance Faire will take place on a Thursday at the end of the second semester. In order to earn a grade the student will be responsible for setting up, taking down and disposing of all parts of his or her display. The five-hour Renaissance Faire will serve as a culmination of the semester's work and will constitute up to 50% of the student's semester grade. After the Faire, each student will write an essay, in diary format, which will explain his or her character's impression of life on the day of the Faire. This essay will comprise the remaining 40% of the exam grade. In order to earn a grade, each student will be required to "live" the life of his or her Renaissance character in every respect. This will include, but not be limited to:
 a. wearing appropriate dress  25%
 b. speaking Elizabethan English  25%
 c. being an active participant in village life  25%
 d. demonstrating his or her craft or trade and correctly using the necessary implements  25%



 

RESEARCH PAPER SPECIFICATIONS

Unless otherwise noted, the writer should refer to The CAVE's WWW site, class notes, hand-outs, and/or the MLA Handbook for detailed instructions.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO OBTAIN A PASSING GRADE ON THE RESEARCH PAPER:
1. The paper must be a minimum of 6, double spaced typed text pages in a font not to exceed 10-12 points with a one inch margin.
2. The paper must contain a Works Cited page in MLA format with a minimum of 10 different sources.
3. The paper must contain at least two internal citations for at least ten sources found on the Works Cited page. This means that at least 20 total citations must appear in the paper in MLA format.
4. A MLA style title page will be attached to the paper.
5. Two (2) copies of the paper shall be turned in (one for the English teacher and one for the History teacher)
 
The research paper shall be written on the topic approved by the History instructor. Students shall not substitute their own topic.

Introduction:
a. must define the topic of the paper and place it in its proper historical setting.
b. must have a thesis statement which fully explains the scope of the paper and which divides the paper into categories to be discussed in the body.
Body:
a. must contain at least one paragraph which fully and clearly
develops each category presented in the introduction.
b. each paragraph must contain at least 5 sentences.
c. each paragraph must have a topic sentence which links to the thesis statement.
d. each paragraph must contain appropriate, documented, factual evidence which fully and clearly develops the category described by the topic sentence.
e. students are encouraged to present their own opinions and conclusions so long as these are supported with documented evidence and follow a clear line of logic.
f. Half of the points earned in the body of the research paper will come from the student's application, interpretation and development of factual information which is pertinent to the topic of the paper.
Conclusion:
a. must contain at least 5 sentences.
b. must contain a topic sentence which connects to the thesis statement.
c. must reiterate, not repeat, the conclusions found in the body of the paper and clearly demonstrate how they apply to the thesis.
