EUROPEAN HISTORY
2004-5
LARRY TREADWELL
ELY HIGH SCHOOL
POMPANO BEACH, FLORIDA
COURSE DESIGN: AP European History is an academic year long course that is meant to be the equivalent of a freshmen college course and can earn students college credit upon successful completion of the national exam given in May. This course covers the history of Europe from the Renaissance to the present. Students are expected to do a considerable amount of reading in both the major text and in numerous supplementary sources. Evidence of this reading is shown in class discussions, questions asked of the teacher, and answers to the teacher's questions, as well as in unit tests and various types of essays. This course is also designed to continue the development of historical research and writing skills as well as the implementation of FCAT skills.
ASSIGNED READINGS: In addition to their main text, A Hisatory of Modern Europe by John Merriman students will be expected to read and master the following works:
The Prince - by Machiavelli
Candide - by Voltaire
The Gods Will Have Blood - by France
Germinal - by Zola
Plus one additional book to be selected from the summer reading list distributed last June.
TESTS AND ESSAYS: All objective tests are multiple choice test since this is the format students will encounter on the exam in May. These tests will primarily cover the assigned readings for the current chapters and assigned primary source material. All tests are cumulative (students will be tested over all of the material covered in class up to the time of the test).
Tests are weighted more heavily as the semester progresses. Multiple Choice Tests will be given via the internet using the Examview web page. Students will access the following URL in order to take their test.:
evtestcenter.com
Password: ltreadwell1 (That is Ltreadwell1-the number one)
Once on the site students will access the particular test being given and enter the password provided for that test. Remember each test is timed and you will be locked out when the time expires. Do not forget to click GRADE AND SUBMIT when you finish the test. All tests and the dates of administration have been posted on the class web site at thecaveonline.com. It is the responsibility of the student to be ready to take each test on the appropriate date. Any student earning a grade of C or less on a unit test will be expected to take an Identification Test, based on the cumulative ID terms which accompany each unit. The ID test will be taken repeatedly until a grade of 85% is achieved.
Essays will be more narrow in scope and will heavily take into account the materials discussed in class. It will be almost impossible to answer an essay question from merely reading the text. It will be expected that all essays will follow standard essay format. The thesis statement will be highlighted in some manner. Essays given as take home assignments will be typed or submitted via email ([email protected]). Remember that there is never a right or a wrong answer, just supported or unsupported. All essays (submitted via email or in person) are due when the tardy bell rings on the date decreed by the instructor.
